Davidson County School Calendar 2023-2024 – Students will see a staggered start to the year, with elementary students starting on Thursday 4 August and the rest of the year on Monday 8 August. Assistant Superintendent Malinda Cobb said the phased approach will give the school district a smoother start, giving it more time to complete elementary students and handle middle and high school core schedules.

There will be 180 academic days, 90 per semester. Days off include the week of Thanksgiving and Spring Break (plus the Monday after Masters) and two weeks of Winter Break from Wednesday, December 21st through January 4th.

June 16, which marks the end of slavery, is also on the school calendar this year after it was designated a federal holiday last summer. It is held every year on June 19, which in 2023 is a Monday. This holiday may affect the summer program.

Public input determined whether the school district plans more early graduation days or asynchronous instruction. Cobb reported that 2,661 people completed the online survey, of which nearly 44.6% were school district employees, 40.5% were parents/guardians, 12.2% were students and 2.7% were business/community members. Each demographic group chooses four days of digital asynchronous learning and two days of early graduation.

Another change schools are expecting is that as part of the district's new assessment process, a nine-week assessment unit will end and a semester assessment unit will begin. Therefore, students will receive a progress report in week six and week 12, then a report card at school. the end of the semester, which is week 18. Cobb explained that semester blocks offer more flexibility in learning and give students more opportunities to re-evaluate and study as needed.

News / Board Approves 2022 23 School Calendar

In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year during a meeting Tuesday night.

Three Rivers Local School District

With the changed calendar, students will have a shorter summer and even have a two-week break in the fall and spring semesters. One week of each term will be a remedial week, which students who need academic help to receive.

According to the changed calendar for 2023-2024, students will start classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall vacation is scheduled for October 2-13, and October 2-6 is the week of prayer. Thanksgiving holiday will be November 22-24. Christmas break for students will be from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring break is from April 1 to 12, and Holy Week is from April 1 to 5, 2024. The last day of school is Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Other breaks in the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; re-make-up on Saturday, October 20; Martin Luther King Day on January 15; holiday and President's Day on Monday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; weather information day on Thursday 28 March; and Good Friday on March 29, 2024.

Proposed 2022 2023 School Year Calendar: Subject To Ministry Approval

Councilman Jason Crane was the only vote against the calendar. During the meeting, he again expressed concern about how the calendar would affect some programs, including Gateway's athletics, band and performing arts programs.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on a proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that a shorter summer … will affect athletics, marching band and Gateway," Crain said after the meeting. "I'm sure the province can handle it, but I also feel that this is only negative for us. I voted with my conscience."

Crane added that he supports the concept of a modified calendar, with only two weeks off each semester giving him a break.

"… I'm just not really happy that we're taking two weeks to get this break," Crane said. "I think a week is enough, but the board chooses what it chooses, and I support the promotion."

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 will be difficult for band practice because summer camp is usually three weeks. But there are several options for band leaders.

Lawrence noted that the competition is scheduled by state and that South Carolina has a variety of school schedules. He also proposed having a one-week band camp during the summer and using an intercessory period for additional band camps.

"Yes, you're used to having a three-week band camp in the summer, but what about a one-week band camp in the summer and use that time for additional camps," Lawrence said. "Two week group camps in the summer and another in the fall. I'm just saying that people have to look at things a little differently and adapt.

As for the sports schedule, Lawrence said the competition schedule is set by the state, so that it does not affect many people. Training should be organized, especially summer training and timing.

"Football and other sports in the fall are always going to be half-hour (games)," Lawrence said. "It's no different than playing basketball during Christmas break and baseball and softball during the spring."

Other concerns were raised about how the two-week recovery could be done. Crain's said he wasn't sure if the two-week break would work, and he heard from others who felt the same way.

Franklin County Schools Approve 2020 21 Calendar

The Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

"We can build 30 minutes of intervention into each day (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty minutes of intervention is a good and intensive intervention for students in a small group setting… If we look at a five-hour workday during the intervention period, that's 10 times the typical school day. So in five days they get 50 times more than in a normal school day.This one week intervention may equal 50 days of intervention during the school year, 30 minutes at a time.

"Everything we do for these students will be designed to help them succeed in the future," Lawrence said. "I think we did well this week. A few weeks ago, we got word from one of the school districts that they saw results after a week of intervention.

As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days and they are looking at how to make that 30 days. Possibilities mentioned include 20 or 25 days in summer and five days in autumn, or five days in autumn and spring.

"Next year will be easier, because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't sound like much, but an extra week gives you a little more flexibility in your summer planning."

Chairman of the school board Dr. John Bradley, said he had reservations about the calendar change, but the fact that most pollsters supported it influenced the decision to vote to agree.

"I'm going to vote knowing that we're creating a lot of problems for a few people," Bradley said. "I apologize. But again, I feel that we should do what the majority of people want, without any reason or good reason not to do it."

During the Jan. 25 meeting, council members approved the transition to the revised draft calendar, but did not approve the actual calendar at that time.
