Hilliard City Schools Calendar 2023 – Hilliard City Schools must recognize Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday, as a district-wide holiday for all students beginning in the 2023-24 school year.

The Hilliard Board of Education on July 7 unanimously approved the school calendar for the 2025-26 school year that includes Eid as a district holiday, but the holiday is not included in the 2022-23 school year, which begins Aug. 17.

The action follows a meeting in May where Islamic students asked the council to allow Eid as a school holiday similar to Good Friday.

"Students brought this issue to the council in the spring. The board (was) thrilled about it and directed management to look into it," said Nadia Long, board chairwoman, on July 8.

The decision was made in part to address the disruption to learning caused by students being absent on vacation, Long said.

Neither students nor parents addressed the board on July 7 about the changed school calendar, but they knew it would be considered.

Sumaya Hamadmad, a parent of three children in Hilliard City Schools, said July 8 that the positive vote was expected.

"We are very grateful to all council members who voted 'yes' to the amendment." The entire Muslim community is very happy about this recognition," said Hammadmad.

The school board's decision came after Muslim students campaigned for changes to the calendar, sending more than 1,600 signatures to the district to include the holiday. After students presented their petition and requests to the board in April, the district conducted a study and made recommendations for changes to the 2026 calendar.

Muslim students petitioned council members on April 11 to have the Muslim holiday, which falls on a different day each year because it is tied to the lunar calendar, be added to the district's calendar as a holiday and equated to Good Friday, a recognized holiday. in the district.

Then the students announced that they were collecting signatures on the petition in order to present it in front of the board on May 9.

"The Board of Education was impressed with the students who spoke to the board and shared their enthusiasm for this request," Long said on April 18.

"It piqued our interest and I asked (Superintendent David Stewart) to look into the request and implement the recommendations," Long said.

The district administration sets the school calendar each year and the board of education adopts it, Long said.
