As president of the Student Government Association of Lone Star College-Tomball, it has been my goal, along with the goal of our entire leadership team, to partner with Student Life and school leadership to build student leadership opportunities on campus and daily to allow student voices to be heard. Currently, SGA is led by staff who represent many of our students and active groups, including first term in college students, TRIO, Honors College, PTK, Chancellor's fellow, international student receiving scholarships, BSA, GSA , LDSSA, etc.

The Student Government Association is a new organization on campus that started in August of 2018 after previously being inactive. Since being reinstated last semester, I have been blessed to serve as SGA President with an amazing and important group of student leaders who have stepped up to help bring the organization to life. Interim officers keep the program running smoothly by presiding over the Club Council and General Assembly meetings, setting the stage for regular staff to vote. Fortunately, many of the interim officers felt such a connection to the organization after their involvement that they volunteered and were elected as permanent members of the executive committee.

As soon as they entered the office, the leadership team hit the ground running and offered to give a presentation at the student leadership conference on campus, iLead, where they assisted Student Life in training house staff. A great moment in our work that demonstrates SGA's commitment to SGA-led leadership this year was on Council Day when committees of volunteer student leaders met to improve governance and voting processes by advocating for revisions to the SGA -constitution and statutes. Jarek Eaton, SGAExecutive Vice President, continued this work by presiding over a large student meeting on campus that passed important changes.

Believing in the importance of service, the SGA leadership team recognized the need for improved opportunities in local elementary schools to learn to read and read for fun and decided to organize an opportunity to stock the library with new children's books and the love from Rose Hill Elementary. A partnership with Tomball ISD and SGA identified Rose Hill as the elementary school and student body that would benefit from the work we wanted to do. The school will also start a bilingual program next year where bilingual books, reading material and flexible seating can help support students. Our ultimate goal is to raise $5,000 from the challenge presented by Scholastic Books where they will match our money with an equal amount of free children's books to give to Rose Hill; value of $10,000. Some student groups try to create competitive challenges to support the city in this opportunity.

The SGA leadership at LSC-Tomball has focused its efforts on connecting, organizing and supporting all of our organizations and students on campus and continues to promote ideas for student engagement – a book that deals with student organization advocacy and attracts more . volunteering with major clubs on campus. Ideas on improving participation include trying to find ways to give clubs access to tools to create more promotional images and provide information that gets attention in the world of social media, as well as creating an atmosphere of fun at Club Board Meetings and making useful plans for the group. troubleshoot and resolve registration issues.

The future is bright for SGA's open nominations for next year's officers and even greater things are possible as SGA seeks to connect and support other organizations and lead by example on campus in what it means to be student leaders.

On Friday, September 14, 2018, TRiO staff and students volunteered at the Houston Food Bank. Every year, TRiO takes pleasure in helping others in need, giving back and showing others that we care. We have prepared more than 3,400 lunches to feed the homeless. It was a great experience.
