Division 1 women's college tennis, especially elite programs like UCLA and Florida, focus on international and US recruiting. These are schools with larger budgets than many other D1 college programs and will attract top tennis players to fill the roster. The NCAA allows D1 coaches to offer the equivalent of 4.5 scholarships. Scholarships are usually "partial" awards, meaning only part of the cost of education (lessons, books, room, board, etc.). By offering partial scholarships, coaches can reward more players on the roster.

The NCAA Division 1 scholarship tournament for women's college tennis teams makes an impact on D2 women's college tennis. Many Division 2 women's college tennis players can compete at the D1 level and there are many reasons why they don't get the chance:

Additionally, a student-athlete may not want to attend a larger university and decide that a smaller D2 women's tennis program is the way to go. Top Division 2 women's tennis colleges include Rollins College and Bentley University.
Attending a Division 3 women's tennis college has benefits not available at the D1 or D2 level of competition. It is possible that the majority of female tennis talent will attend D3 schools, but for the most part, D3 players are interested in playing tennis at the collegiate level as part of their overall college experience. While NCAA D1 and D2 players should train, train and train as if tennis were a full-time job. D3 Tennis School participants will have more time to participate in other campus experiences and activities. The best Division 3 colleges for women's tennis teams are Emory, M.I.T. and Johns Hopkins University.

The National Collegiate Tennis Association (NAIA) operates under different recruiting guidelines than NCAA schools. The NAIA allows for early recruiting, reminiscent of the NCAA's D3 recruiting process. The difference for NAIA women's tennis colleges is the ability to offer athletic scholarships. Another benefit for student-athletes looking to play NAIA tennis is that these schools have lower enrollment rates, which results in smaller class sizes. Athletic commitment time is generally less than at D1 schools which provide opportunities for student-athletes to participate in academic and other non-athletic activities. Asbury University and Taylor University are two of the best NAIA tennis colleges ever.
The NJCAA allows female tennis players whose GPA and ACT scores are too low to qualify for enrollment in an NCAA or NAIA women's tennis college to continue practicing the sport by improving grades. The NJCAA's two-year tennis academy offers scholarships, and coaches work diligently to see student-athletes improve their grades and tennis skills to move on to NCAA or NAIA college tennis.
