By a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the revised calendar, students will have a shorter summer and instead have a two-week break between the fall and spring semesters. One week of each semester will be a remedial week, giving students who need academic help the opportunity to receive it.

Students will begin school on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 in the revised 2023-24 calendar. Fall break is scheduled for Oct. 2-13, Oct. 2-6 is the intervening week. The thanksgiving will be held on November 22-24. Christmas vacation for students will be from 20 December 2023 to 3 January 2024. Spring break will be April 1-12, with intermission week set for April 1-5, 2024. The last day of school will be Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Other breaks in the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; Remake Day on Friday, October 20; Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15; Holiday and President's Day Friday February 16 and Monday February 19, 2024; Weather make-up day on Thursday 28 March; and the Good Friday holiday on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Councilman Jason Crane cast the lone vote against the calendar. During the meeting, he again raised concerns about how the calendar would affect several programs, including athletics, band and the Gateway Performing Arts program.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on a proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that the short summer … will affect athletics, band and goal," Crain said after the meeting. "I believe the district will make it work, but I also think it's a big negative for us. I voted my conscience on this one."

Crane added that he supports the idea of ​​a separate calendar, with just a two-week break each semester giving him a break.

"…I'm not sold on the fact that we're going to need two weeks for these breaks," Crane said. "I think one week would be enough, but the board voted for what we voted for, and I want to support it moving forward."

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 will be tough for band training because there is usually a three-week summer band camp. But there are many options for band managers.

Lawrence noted that the tournaments are scheduled by state and that different schools have schedules throughout South Carolina. He suggested holding a one-week band camp in the summer and using the tryout period for additional band camps.

"Yeah, you're used to having a three-week band camp in the summer, but what about a one-week band camp in the summer and use those training periods for additional band camps," Lawrence said. "Two weeks of group camp in the summer and another in the fall. I'm just saying that people have to look at things a little differently and adapt."

As for athletic schedules, Lawrence said the tournament schedule is set by the state, so it won't have much of an impact. Training, especially summer training, and their timings will need to be adjusted.

"Soccer and other fall sports will definitely be (games) during this break," Lawrence said. "It's no different than basketball events during Christmas break, baseball and softball events during spring break."

Another concern expressed was how well two weeks of patches would work. Crane said he wasn't sure the two-week break would serve his purpose, and heard feedback from others who felt the same way.

"We're able to have 30 minutes of intervention in each of our days (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty minutes of intervention for our small group of students is a good, intensive intervention… If you look at a five-hour day of that intervention time, that's 10 times the normal school day. About five times the day, 50 times what they get in a regular school day." A week of intervention can be equivalent to 50 days of 30-minute intervention at a time during the school year."

"Everything we do for those students is designed to help them be successful next term," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot better that week. We actually heard from a school district a few weeks ago that saw results from a one-week intervention."

Regarding Gateway, Lawrence said that it should be 30 days and that they are looking at how to do 30 days. Options he mentioned include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and five in the spring.

"Next year everything will be easier because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but that extra week gives you a little more flexibility in how you schedule your summer."

School Board President Dr. John Bradley said he was skeptical about the revised calendar, but the fact that most respondents supported it played a role in his decision to press for its approval.

"I'm going to vote for it knowing we're causing a lot of problems for some people," Bradley said. "I apologize for that. But then again I think we should do it even though the majority of people don't have reasons not to do it or compelling reasons not to."

At their Jan. 25 meeting, board members approved moving to a revised draft calendar, but have yet to approve an actual calendar at this time.
