The Common Core Standards set guidelines for English Language Arts (ELA), as well as literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects. Because students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas, literature supports the skills and understanding needed to prepare for college and careers in multiple disciplines.

Common Core requires students to read stories and literature as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that will force them to relate to what they have read. This emphasizes the critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills necessary for success in college, career, and life.

For each grade level, a solid foundation will be built in all 4 of these areas: grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing.

Remember: writing can only be great if creative ideas are expressed in an organized manner, with proper word choice, grammar, and varied and appropriate sentence structures. After interviewing the finalists, the panel recommended Tesfai — and the full board agreed on July 20 on the first day of a two-day meeting at UC San Francisco Mission Bay.

Tesfai immigrated to the United States as a child from his native Eritrea and is a first-generation student. Before transferring to UCLA, he was an assistant professor at Los Angeles City College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in African American studies and two master's degrees in social welfare and public policy before earning his Ph.D.. studies.

He has a background in counseling and uses his own experience to engage in outreach to help community college students navigate the transfer process. It also encourages students from underrepresented communities to apply to graduate school.

"UC provides incredible opportunities for education, research and economic mobility to countless students in California and beyond," Tesfai said in a news release from the UC president's office. "I am grateful for this opportunity to bring my experience as a first-generation, non-traditional student to serve as one of two student voices on the Board of Regents and advocate for our priorities and needs.

"There is much work to be done before the university provides the critical academic resources and support needed to give students the tools to succeed. I can't wait to start this important activity."
