Anderson Powell said that under the calendar law, the traditional school calendar begins on Aug. 28 and ends on June 12 in the 2023-24 school year.

Members of the Superintendent's Teacher Advisory Council asked if the calendar could be changed to end the first semester before winter. In Wake's calendar, the first semester ends in January, so high school graduation exams take place after students return from vacation.

Some districts schedule final exams before winter, making the first semester shorter than the second semester. Wake chooses to make the two semesters as similar as possible.

"I'm very happy that we came up with a calendar that I think generally meets the needs of most people," Anderson Powell told the board.
