By a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at a meeting Tuesday night.

With the changed calendar, students will have a shorter summer, but instead two weeks off in the fall and spring semesters. One of the weeks each semester is Remedial Week, which gives students who need academic support the opportunity to receive it.

Classes for students on the revised calendar for 2023-2023 will begin on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall holidays are scheduled from 2-13. With October, 2.-6. October as Mediation Week. The Thanksgiving holiday is on the 22nd-24th. The November student Christmas break is from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring break April 1 – 12, intermission week April 1 – 5, 2024. Last day of school Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Other breaks in the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; Weather Makeup Day is Friday, October 20; Martin Luther King Jr. Day is January 15; Holiday and President's Day Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; Weather Makeup Day Thursday March 28; And Happy Friday, March 29, 2024.

Board member Jason Crane was the lone vote against the calendar. At the meeting, he reiterated how the calendar affects many programs, including athletics, band and Gateway's performing arts programs.

At the meeting, Aiken County Sheriff Lawrence said the summer of 2023 will typically include three weeks of summer camp for band practice. But there are many options for the conductor.

Lawrence noted that the competitions are set by the state and that there are many different school programs throughout South Carolina. It is suggested to conduct band camp for a week in summer and use grace period for additional band camps.

"Yeah, you're used to doing three weeks of band camp in the summer, but how about taking advantage of the interplay of one week of band camp and more band camps in the summer," Lawrence said. "One is a two-week band camp in the summer and another in the fall. I'm just saying people need to look at and embrace things a little differently."

As for athletic programs, Lawrence said competition schedules are set by the state, so they won't be affected much. Exercises, especially summer exercises and their timing should be adjusted.

"Football and other fall sports will definitely be (games) during that break," Lawrence said. "It's no different with basketball with Christmas break events, baseball with spring break events and softball."

Another concern raised is how the two-week reform will work. Crane said he didn't believe the two-week break would serve his purpose and had heard from other people who favored it.

The Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

"We're able to build 30 minutes of intervention into each of our days (of the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty minutes of intervention for our small group of students is a good, big intervention… If you look at a five-hour day during that intervention, that's 10 times what they get in a regular school day." . So for five days they are getting 50 times more than they get in a normal school day. That one week of intervention equates to 50 days of intervention over the school year, 30 minutes at a time.

"Everything we do for these students is designed to help them succeed next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we can do very well this week. We actually saw results from a school district a few weeks ago using a one-week intervention.

As for the gateway, it has to be completed in 30 days and we are looking at how to do it in 30 days, Lawrence said. The possibilities he mentions are 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"After a year, everything becomes easier because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but that extra week gives you a little more flexibility in how you plan your summer."

School Board Chairman Dr. John Bradley said he had doubts about the changed calendar, but the fact that a majority of respondents were in favor of it contributed to his decision to cast his vote.

"I'm going to vote for it knowing we're going to cause a lot of problems for some people," Bradley said. "I apologize for that. But again, I think we should do what most people want to do for no reason or compelling reason.

At their Jan. 25 meeting, board members agreed to move to the revised calendar, but did not approve the original calendar at that time.
