It's that time of year again! Photographers are posting collages of their Top 9 most popular Instagram posts. I've only posted 42 images on Instagram in 2019 so far, less than one a week. Due to variations in the number of people on Instagram at different times of the day and how the site's new post distribution algorithms affect my posts, I don't see many of my own favorite images. among the most liked posts on my Instagram account (shown below), so I tend to make my own choices.

I don't have the privilege or luxury of being able to travel the world in pursuit of great images, but I live within easy driving distance of breathtaking mountains, coastlines and deserts. I predict unique sun, moon and star positions to enhance the composition and in the process discover new locations for the workshop and share them with the workshop photographers in good seasons At best, once in a while I'll get a good photo.

How to find and choose the best? On Flickr, I found over 450 photos when I searched for "2019," and I saved over 100 new photos to my 2019 Flickr Favorites album:

As usual, some of my favorite images are new edits produced in the past, often discovered when reviewing old folders. As my tools, skills, and goals evolved, I saw new opportunities for old images, often images that I had never post-processed before. For the sake of my year-end recap, I put them at the end of my 2019 Favorites album and attribute them to their previous year.

I don't want to pick my year-end favorites too soon because we usually have great weather in early winter, as the following December 13 sunset over the salt marshes of Death Valley shows. :

Rain is uncommon in the lower reaches of Death Valley, where it averages only 1.9 minutes, but sometimes runoff from rain in the upper mountains helps to temporarily restore prehistoric Lake Manly in Badwater Basin.

This image is quickly becoming my latest print and it looks especially good in the metal print on paper, picked up from my SmugMug site.

Newly introduced places stand out in my favourites, perhaps in part because they're new, but I also think it's easier to take a whole new look at a place when it's first. first you get there. Although I've visited White Pocket, Arizona before, here's my first clear night there:

I just picked up the Nikon D850 in December and this is not only one of my first Milky Way images taken on it, I was also interested in testing its dynamic range on the reflection of the Milky Way.

Every year I encounter new time dependencies in Yosemite National Park. Special fall opportunities can rely on a single group of plants illuminated with light for a few minutes, like these young cottonwoods by the Merced River:

While the chances based on sun position are repeatable and predictable, other times the chances are more random, like the sunset color on the complex storm clouds over Bodie:

Sometimes we revisit a place of interest, only to be treated to exactly the kind of lihgt we want to see from it, like the Ring of Venus effect captured at Mono Lake:

Other works can be predicted months or even years in advance, you just need to allocate time in your schedule to go get them, like the Milky Way rising over this mine in Nevada:

Even locations with iconic layouts can yield great results if you take a closer look at what else is there, like this downstream layout at Kanarra Creek in Utah, in action. good without Upper or Lower Kanarra Falls:

So that last image is a bonus and the previous one isn't really one of my photographic "best" images, but you can find dozens of contenders in My Favorite Photos album of 2018.

For some reason Thor's Well seems to be photographed so often that it needs particularly good atmospheric conditions to make it stand out. No doubt I will revisit the site more to see what else the site has to offer in terms of lighting and conditions.

Sometimes I can't access a particular image the year I took it, either because I lack a sufficient tool to do it fairly or I simply don't have the time needed to process it. . "Sometimes the most interesting photos we take are from a new place or from a fresh perspective on a place we haven't visited in a long time," says Sullivan. "In 2018, I took a 2,000-mile trip to revisit some of my favorite places in Oregon. Although I lived in Oregon for many years in the 1980s and revisited a lot in the mid to late 2000s, I hadn't been to some of these places in years. "My primary exposure here is 1/8 second at f/16, ISO 200 and that produces a useful result, but the HDR processing in Photomatix provides more shadow detail and outstanding color, to have better overall results.
