Tarleton State, Southeastern Louisiana Schedule 2023 24 Football Series

In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at a meeting Tuesday night.

With the modified calendar, students will have a shorter summer and even have a two-week break in the fall and spring semesters. One week per semester is a compensatory week that students who need academic help can receive.

In the revised calendar for 2023-24, students begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall vacation is scheduled for October 2-13, and October 2-6 is scheduled as International Week. The Thanksgiving holiday is November 22-24. Christmas break for students is from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring Break is April 1-12, with a week off scheduled for April 1-5, 2024. The last day of school is a Thursday in May. 30, 2024.

Other proposed holiday calendars include Labor Day on September 4, 2023. October 20, Friday is a weather make-up day. January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Holiday and President's Day Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; Weather makeup day on Thursday, March 7; and the Good Friday holiday on March 29, 2024.

Councilman Jason Crane was the lone voice against the calendar. At the meeting, he again expressed concern about the calendar's impact on many programs, including Gateway's athletics, band and performing arts programs.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on a proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that a shorter summer will affect athletics, band and gate," Crane said after the meeting. "I'm sure the district will try, but I also think it's a big loss for us. I voted with my conscience.

Crane added that he supports the idea of ​​a modified calendar, with only two weeks per semester to provide breaks.

"… I'm not sold on the fact that we need two weeks for it," Crane said. "I think a week will be enough, but the council chooses what it chooses and I support moving forward."

At the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent Lawrence King said the summer band camp would typically include three weeks of band practice in the summer of 2023. But there are many options for band managers.

Tournaments are scheduled by state and South Carolina has different school programs, Lawrence said. He also recommends having a one-week group camp during the summer and using the interim period for additional group camps.

"Yes, you have three weeks of band camp in the summer, but what if you use the time in between for a week of band camp in the summer and another band camp," Lawrence said. "Two weeks of band camp in the summer and another in the fall. I just said people should look at it a little differently and adjust to it."

As for the athletic program, Lawrence said the tournament schedule is organized by the state, so that it does not affect many people. Practices should be organized, especially summer practices and their timing.

"Football and other fall sports always have (games)," Lawrence said. It's no different than basketball games during Christmas break, baseball and softball games during the spring.

Another concern is how the fix will work in two weeks. Crain's said he doesn't think the two-week break works and has heard from others who feel the same way.

The Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

"We can build 30 minutes of intervention into every day (of the school year)," Lawrence said. Thirty minutes of intervention is a good, intensive intervention for our students in a small group setting… If we look at a five-hour day during that intervention, that's 10 times more than what they receive in a typical school day. So in five days, they get 50 times more than a regular school day. This one-week intervention can be equivalent to 50 days of intervention in 30-minute sessions each time during the academic year.

"Everything we do for these students is designed to help them succeed in the next quarter," Lawrence said. I think we can do some good things that week. "We saw results in one school district a few weeks ago using a one-week intervention."

As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days, and they are looking into how to do that 30 days. Among the possibilities mentioned are 20 or 25 days in summer and five days in autumn or five days in autumn and spring.

"After freshman year, it's easier because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but an extra week gives you more flexibility in how you plan your summer."

School Board President Dr. John Bradley said he was skeptical about the revised calendar, but the majority of people polled in favor played a role in the decision to vote for approval.

"I'm going to vote knowing that we're going to cause a lot of trouble for some people," Bradley said. "I'm sorry about that. But I have to do what most people don't want, or if there's no good reason to do it."

At the January 25 meeting, council members approved moving to a revised draft calendar, but did not approve the actual calendar at that time.
