Having remained independent for the past 11 seasons, the Cougars have secured a number of gaming deals with broadcasts scattered across the United States. The Big 12 has yet to decide whether to play eight conference games like the ACC and SEC or nine games like the current Big 12 and Big 10 and PAC-12. Either way, BYU has some serious issues to address in its future plans.

You won't find anyone expecting Utah to be on this list. I personally think BYU and Utah deserve a break. This matchup no longer helps BYU in the Power 5 conference. Specifically, we plan to travel to Logan in 2023. The environment is tough and hot. There was some cheating going on in the 2021 race, especially with Utah being disturbed in the student quarter a few feet from the landing spot. Also, whether intentional or sheer stupidity and bad luck, BYU tends to suffer at least one fatal and sometimes season-changing injury while playing against the Aggies, especially with Logan. Must pass USU in 2023, especially since it's a road game.

Enter UNLV. The Cougars are encouraged to maintain a winning Group of 5 schedule, unload a heavy conference schedule and add the win to their tally for their six-goal New Year's bid. People may point it out and scoff, but the teams that won back-to-back national championships the last time I checked regularly make their FCS teams every year. 2021 national champion Georgia State beat South Charleston 56-7 in this year's road games against Tennessee and Georgia Tech.

Alabama hurt Mercer. The next Big Twelve foe, Oklahoma, opened the season against Missouri. Big 12 champion Baylor defeated South Texas 66-7. Utah has played Weber State or Idaho State three of the last four years. Continue;

Byu Academic Calendar 2022

BYU should field an FCS team every year to rehabilitate players and provide opportunities for young players to participate in live gaming events. Otherwise, it will play a non-stop schedule of brutal Power 5 levels. We've all seen how BYU, like most teams, is depleted at the end of the year after a grueling and boring schedule. This will be the case every year in the Big 12. The Cougars will contend for the conference title, and it doesn't help that they beat themselves by playing three top non-conference opponents. They must order plain and simple cupcakes.

Southern Utah is the perfect candidate for this state's team. The meeting is mutually beneficial, as many BYU players have ties to southern Utah, and SUU will be paid handsomely for their trouble.

Going forward, BYU should rotate among local FCS schools like SUU, Weber State, Dixie State and Idaho State.

What about other unlisted teams? It would be unwise to let the two SEC teams go as planned. If BYU is trying to balance a solid schedule and win enough games to win NY6 ball, having two strong SEC teams isn't going to make that plan a success.

Given its geography and history, UNLV is a more attractive 5-man opponent than Rice or Fresno State.

Matchups with USC and other PAC-12 foes should be rare, as BYU will no longer need the PAC-12 to continue adding to its schedule as BYU heads into the Big 12. Additionally, BYU is proving better than this conference with a solid 5-0 record in 2021.
