Rutgers Calendar 2023-24 – Since 1766, Rutgers Preparatory School has prepared students for the challenges of college and beyond. At the Upper School, students enjoy many of our traditions, from freshman field trips in September to college commencements – and we value the connection to the past that our traditions provide. The school year is highlighted by annual events such as Career Day, Burger Blast, and Course Commencement, as well as daily traditions such as Morning Assembly, when the entire high school gathers to hear from students and teachers about upcoming events, and sports results are announced. More. and academic competitions, celebrating the achievements of our students or sharing a poignant reflection.

Our many academic and extracurricular offerings enhance the rich diversity of our community, but we appreciate the benefits of living in a multicultural community through the daily experience of working and collaborating with students and faculty who live in a multicultural community. At Rutgers Prep, approximately 40% of our students are "students of color"—not only do we celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, but we also celebrate Diwali, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Chinese New Year. While many organizations promote "colorblindness," we openly embrace the races, religions, socioeconomic status, sexuality, and other forms of diversity that exist in our society and use this richness in our daily interactions to promote mutual understanding and tolerance.

High school students understand the RPS motto: Severa res est verum gaudium – "Hard work is true joy." Success in classrooms, art studios, sports fields, galleries and the wider communities in which students live is a direct result of the effort and commitment they demonstrate. We find it easy to measure college acceptance, standardized test scores, state championships in sports, selection in juried art shows, or all-state choirs and bands. We experience excellence in more subtle ways, too—how often high school students volunteer to read to junior high school students, and the comprehension of complex data when members of a student research class present their gene analysis results to researchers at Rutgers University's Foxman Institute. High school students are assigned a counselor when they arrive at school. Advisers typically have groups of ten students as they transition from freshman to graduate. The counselor plays a strong role in guiding students to become independent learners, active participants, and leaders who enrich the school and the larger community. Counselors meet regularly with counselors, either in short sessions to share important information or in longer sessions to discuss specific topics. They also contact individual advisors informally throughout the school day and through formally scheduled meetings as needed.

The counselor's role is to actively listen, give advice, praise, facilitate communication between home and school, and provide a more neutral perspective on challenges. A counselor is often in a unique position to provide relevant information about the counselor's situation to parents, classroom teachers, coaches, and administrators to help them work with students.

The counselor has a "big picture" view of the student's progress, academically and otherwise, and is the student's advocate, especially when he or she is first adjusting to high school and when the student can initiate conversations with teachers or have difficult conversations. The counselor is the student's sounding board, providing advice on how to handle situations and encouraging the student to be active in the daily life of the school community. He helps the student set realistic and attainable goals and talks to the student about ways to achieve those goals.

Rutgers Prep encourages and supports volunteerism among its students—high school students completed more than 11,000 hours of community service last year, even while enduring quarantine and lockdown for much of the school year. As part of its curriculum requirements, Rutgers Prep expects all high school students to complete at least 10 hours of community service each academic year and reflect on these experiences, and many choose to go beyond our expectations. For students who complete 50 hours or more in a given year, we offer an Honors Certificate. The highest recognition is the "Honors250" award for completing 250 hours per year.

All classrooms at Rutgers Prep, kindergarten through twelfth grade, are equipped with overhead projectors and Apple TVs, allowing our faculty to share digital resources with students. Additionally, teachers are increasingly favoring VR headsets, MakerBot 3D printers, iPads, and laptops to continue collaboration in the classroom. Be it a digital presentation or an interactive exercise, teaching and learning are enhanced through this combination of digital and projection technology.

In keeping with this tradition of balancing the new with the familiar, the Upper School is proud to announce the launch of an expanded iPad initiative for the 2013-2014 school year. After much deliberation and discussion, the high school department decided that all students should own an iPad.

Ubiquitous and unified technology gives students and teachers more opportunities to take advantage of digital tools and resources. E-textbooks are readily available, offering an attractive alternative to traditional text.

Rutgers University Hikes Tuition Again Ahead Of 2022 23

If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we are not preparing students for today or tomorrow.

As a Google Apps school, our faculty and students use the latest management systems to enhance collaborative learning. Additionally, we use a complete learning management system to facilitate student-faculty communication across the boundaries of the school day and campus. Whether it's checking homework, contributing to a conversation, or accessing digital resources, it's an important part of our 21st century education.

Adult Program Calendar

In the high school humanities department, our history teachers work with students to understand the past and develop the skills to apply that understanding to the world we live in today. Our aim is to encourage students to become active participants in the ongoing historical process. Our program introduces students to cultures, events, and forces of change from around the world, past and present. We offer opportunities to think critically about issues in social science disciplines – history, geography, political science, economics, sociology, psychology and anthropology – and to gather and apply information.

Apart from this core of knowledge and skills, we strive to promote responsible attitudes and actions. By emphasizing the importance and dignity of individuals, we encourage students to respect themselves and others. We introduce the principles and practices of democracy and encourage students to explore the various economic, social, political and environmental challenges of our time. Students will develop an awareness of these challenges and the ability to acquire, evaluate, and use information to address these challenges. We study the past not only to understand the present but also to understand the possibilities of the future.

Freshmen are required to take Foundations of Civilization, juniors must take American History, and seniors must select a history year. A second-year history course is recommended.
