In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education adopted a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the revised schedule, students will have a shorter summer break and two weeks in the fall and spring semesters. One of the weeks in each semester will be a week of tutoring, allowing access to students who need academic support.

Academic Calendar Approved

The revised schedule for 2023-24 has students begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall break schedule for October. 2-13, with October 2-6 weeks of mediation. . November Thanksgiving holiday is 22-24. Christmas Day for students will be December 20. 2023 to Jan. 3, 2024. Spring break will be April 1-12, with a midweek break April 1-5, 2024. Last day of school is Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Lawrence notes that competition varies from state to state and school schedules vary across South Carolina. He also suggested that the band have a week in summer camp and add bands during the break.

Like sports schedules, Lawrence said the schedules are set by the state, so they shouldn't be too impactful. Exercises must be adjusted, especially summer exercises and their timing.

"I played football and other sports for sure during that break," Lawrence said. "That's no different than hosting basketball events on Christmas Day, baseball and softball events in the spring."

Another concern expressed is how well the two-week fix will work. Crane said he doesn't believe spending two weeks will serve his purpose and has heard from others who feel the same way.

"We can build 30 minutes of intervention into each of our days (during the school year). "Thirty minute intervention is a good, intensive intervention for our students in a small group setting… If we consider that intervention time is five hours a day, that is 10 times what it is. they get in a regular school today. So they have five days that are 50 times longer than normal school days. That one week of intervention could equate to 50 intervention days in a school year, 30 minutes a day.

"Everything we do for students is designed to help them succeed in the coming quarter," says Lawrence. "I think we can do a lot with seven kids. We also heard from the district a few weeks ago that they were seeing results within a week of the intervention."

At the Laurence portal, he said that 30 days was necessary and that they were looking to make it happen. It provides facilities for 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall or for five days in the fall and spring.
