Seattle University Calendar 2023 – Check out Seattle U's list of reading social events; Every selection affects our teachers in their lives.
Prospective and new students will come out to social programs to talk with students about their experiences. Often the questions will be very similar, which is how I created this list. I hope this helps you decide if this is the right program for you or strengthens your decision to apply.

Practical experience is a big part of civics education. Personally, I feel like I learned more during the gym than I ever could in the classroom. There are parts of the practical experience that seem to be underreported and ignored by some people. So, let's talk to find out what to expect!

Undergraduate students Reha Rauf, '25, Adrian Rivera, '23, and Enrique Rodriguez, '22, work on the Humanities Engineering Applications Lab team with Henry Lui, professor of electrical and computer science at Seattle University (Seattle U). His research, part of a three-year project funded by the National Science Foundation, aims to improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of solar power at the Navajo facility. These solar systems provide storage for some of the more than 10,000 homes, where power lines do not reach and cannot reach.

"What I love about this research is that it is useful and will improve people's lives. We aim to design for sustainability, which also means understanding the culture and society that will be used in the grid system ", said Rodriguez, who studied electricity.
This research project is just one example of how sustainability is part of the college engineering experience at Seattle U. Civil and Environmental Engineering says, "In addition to thinking about money, we ask our students to think about the potential social and environmental -impact of their projects." Architecture professor Philip Thompson, director of Seattle U's Center for Environmental Justice and Conservation. "We have students think about the third-bottom line in the classroom, in our capstone design skills, and in college research projects. We have also set an example as a university that prioritizes sustainability in our decision-making," he continued.

The university's commitment and leadership in sustainability is reflected in its ranking of #3 out of 650 graduate institutions by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. In 2021, the university was ranked 14th

The annual "Cool Schools" list. And Seattle U is the first university in Washington state and the first Jesuit university in the US to commit to eliminating all funding from coal, oil or natural gas companies by 2023.

Students from all three departments at Seattle U (civil and environmental, electrical and computer, and mechanical engineering) learn about the importance of sustainability in design and decision-making in all programs. To create a bright and sustainable future, students must transcend the technical and economic aspects of research. Traditional engineering courses, such as thermodynamics, are rich in problems and projects that challenge students to create designs that are environmentally and socially sustainable.
A common theme in many of the courses is a sustainable design project. For example, in Global Engineering Economics, which is required of all undergraduate students, student groups develop a business plan related to engineering that works in developing countries. Whether their plan is a bicycle-powered mobile phone or a drinking water treatment system, students must first consider their three-down-the-line business plan.

Our departments also have specialized electives: While energy courses are often found in undergraduate engineering programs, Seattle U also offers specialized courses in sustainability. In architecture and environment, students can take courses in sustainable engineering that focus on sustainable design. Electrical engineering students can learn about creating sustainable renewable energy from scarce electricity sources in a course on grid systems in developing countries.
Engineering students experience sustainable development outside their field of expertise. Through the university curriculum (within the Jesuit artistic tradition), engineering students can study subjects such as Ecocriticism and Sustainability or Social Justice and Environment.

Designing a master's capstone gives students another touch of longevity. The Seattle U Project brings together strong teams of industrial students and non-profit donors to solve real problems. Many projects focus on sustainability. This year, mechanical engineering students are tasked with reducing energy use in historical groups and exploring renewable energy sources in the St. James's Cathedral. Meanwhile, a group of electrical engineering students is working with Tacoma Power, a local utility, to design and evaluate a renewable energy solution to power an island in Puget Sound. In the Department of Architecture and Environment, students work with Pallet – a social enterprise that helps cities move homeless families into permanent housing and jobs – to find the best solutions for rapid response and implementation of off-grid technologies. . To promote social welfare.

Long-term opportunities for students go beyond the classroom. Since 2004, Seattle U researchers in the sustainable world have worked with communities in Haiti, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Peru, Thailand and Zambia on projects ranging from aquaculture to housing. So far, more than 20,000 people have benefited from their clean drinking water projects.

Seattle U also maintains close relationships with non-profit organizations that focus on sustainability and have international impact. KiloWatts for Humanity (KWH), a non-profit organization founded by Seattle U faculty and staff, is implementing solar kiosks in rural Zambia. Architecture students, trained and working closely with KWH volunteer professionals, are involved in many aspects of the project, from electrical design and community research to building committees. These experiential opportunities can have a transformative impact on students, who can experience firsthand the importance of increased sustainability in vulnerable populations.
Seattle U's dedication to preparing engineering students to build a bright and sustainable future reflects what Pope Francis wrote in his book,
