The search for UF's next president could be affected by a bill that would prohibit part of the appointment process from being made public.

UF spokeswoman Hessy Fernandez wrote in an email that UF is expected to begin the search for a new president in March. The finding has been kept secret until now, and SB 520/HB 703 will remain so.

UF President Kent Fuchs announced his resignation Jan. 5 in a campus-wide email and video message. He will remain president for the rest of the year until a new president is appointed.

Meanwhile, Florida senators and representatives have introduced Senate Bill 520 and House Bill 703, which would delay the release of any information about the university's presidential candidates, including meeting notes, which would make the information obtained through a public records request public. .

About two weeks after Fuchs announced her resignation, Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Nikki Fried, a gubernatorial candidate, wrote a letter to the board of trustees.

The letter reiterated the concerns of faculty, students, alumni and the public regarding the ongoing issue.

"Let me make this very clear," Fried wrote. The search for the next university president must be completely ethical, transparent and non-partisan, free from any political influence.

The ongoing academic freedom scandal at UF has drawn national attention to state government influence over university administration. In October, the university refused to allow three political science professors to testify in a lawsuit against the state.

The decision raised concerns about how much influence the state has over university decisions, with four members of the board of trustees having political ties to Gov. Ron DeSantis and donating to his campaign.

If DeSantis is re-elected, Jenne believes the governor will continue to try to mold the board of trustees in his image, while Democratic candidates opposing DeSantis will try to return some powers to the institutions.

Rep. Geraldine Thompson (D), who voted against the bill each time, said she thought the policy would really permeate the teaching process at the university based on issues of academic freedom.

Thompson said the governor replaces board members when their terms expire, implying the governor's influence over administrative decisions such as appointing the president.

Two new board members will be appointed when the five-year terms of Thomas Kuntz and Daniel O'Keefe expire in January 2023.

But despite UF's commitments, concerns remain about potential political influence and a lack of transparency in future appointments.

Irene Mulvey, president of the American Association of University Professors, released a statement on January 25 expressing concern about academic integrity and the impending teaching presidency.

The AAUP is speaking out because UF once again appears to be moving away from higher education's mission to serve the public good, Mulvey wrote.
