On January 24, 2014, the Board of Regents and current interim president, Mary Sue Coleman, held a special meeting to announce that Brown University Dean Mark Schlissel will succeed Coleman as the university's 14th president.

Schlissel said at that meeting that he will not go to the "top down", but will listen to students and teachers first.

"The best ideas come from the people who teach and learn, which is why I have to listen first," Schlissel said.

Schlissel served as Dean of Brown University for three years and Dean of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of California-Berkeley from 2008 to 2011. With an MD-PhD degree in physical chemistry, Schlissel was a prolific researcher and continued to publish during his time at Berkeley and Brown.

"(Research) was his life," Kwan Chow, one of Schlissel's alumni at UC-Berkeley, told the Michigan Daily in 2014. "He ran a lab. Two years of administration won't erase that."

On October 26, graduate students at Brown University wrote an open letter warning graduate students at Schlissel University about their commitment to anti-employment and anti-austerity during the time he was on trial.

Schlissel's appointment follows a $315,000 presidential search that lasted more than eight months and was initially anticipated by students and faculty. Dentistry professor Rex Holland, who was vice chairman of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs at the time, said he was impressed with Schlissel's credentials and excited to see him lead the University.

"I am very impressed with President-elect Schlissel's credentials," Holland said at the 2014 SACUA meeting. "I have every confidence that Schlissel-elect will be a great leader for a great institution."

Members of the 2014 Student Central Government were pleased with the student-centered approach that Schlissel demonstrated in his speech.

"(Schlissel) said he would work with students whenever he could," CSG Vice President Bobby Dishell said at the 2014 CSG meeting.

In September 2014 – just four months into his tenure as president – graduate students launched a petition calling for the resignation of sporting director David Brandon. Brandon was criticized by students for raising student ticket prices and decreasing student participation in football games, as well as ignoring player safety concerns. The petition – which received over 10,000 signatures in just over 24 hours – came amid concerns that Schlissel's Ivy League record made him unfit to lead a Big 10 football team. Schlissel eventually accepted Brandon's resignation in October 31, 2014.

Schlissel began his tenure as UM president with a number of initiatives, including strengthening sustainability and addressing anti-social behavior on campus.

In September, Schlissel met with members of each of the university's FSL departments to discuss alcohol abuse and sexism — two issues he says are rampant within the university: Fraternity and Family Life. Schlissel says that too much partisan culture has eroded the university's reputation for academic excellence.

The 2016 election brought an idea to campus. Following former President Donald Trump's victory on November 8, Schlissel wrote an email to the university community offering resources for students seeking post-election support.

"I hope that each of us will continue to be proud of the opportunities before us as students, staff and as a world-class public research university controlled by the people," wrote Schlissel. "Elections often mean big changes, but the values ​​we stand for at UM have been shaped by nearly 200 years."

At a rally after Trump's November 10 victory in Diag, Schlissel addressed the crowd and urged them to continue to celebrate what they believe in.

"Ninety percent of you have rejected the kind of hate, paranoia and nostalgia for the kind of idealized form of nothingness yesterday that was presented during the campaign," Schlissel said during the event. "So I encourage you, continue your support and your voice has been heard. They are loud and clear – this is America's transformation. This is how it always changes. This is how it's going to change for the better.

The comments drew criticism from conservative students on campus who developed a petition condemning the anti-Trump protests and Schlissel's comments.
