Ers Move To The American Set For 2023 24

GEORGETOWN — The Georgetown County School District could retain the traditional academic calendar for at least the 2022-2023 school year if the school board approves it at next month's meeting.

Teachers will return to classrooms on Aug. 8 and students on Aug. 15, according to a proposed calendar presented to board members during a Feb. 15 workshop.

Veterans Day is slated to be a half-day for students and staff, giving them the opportunity to participate in area activities in honor of the holiday.

Georgetown County Schools Could Keep Traditional Calendar For 2022 23 School Year

The first semester would end after the Christmas holidays on January 12, and the school year on June 2.

According to the traditional calendar of the current school year, teachers returned on August 11 and students left on August 18. The first semester ended after the Christmas break in mid-January, and the end of school is planned for the summer break on June 3.

The district previously proposed a revised calendar that would have allowed students to have more days off but start school earlier, which Superintendent Keith Price said many parents opposed.

Price reiterated at the workshop that he wants to hold public meetings to get feedback that would help the district decide whether a revised calendar could be proposed in the future.

"So we are not absent; We haven't made any progress on that," Price said. "Now we have to work with him a little bit more to figure out which way we're going to go."

All rights reserved.| Terms of Use| Privacy Policy After receiving support from families and GPS staff, Gilbert Public Schools will officially transition to a new academic calendar beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. The new calendar means students and staff have two weeks off for fall, winter and spring break. The board officially adopted the new calendar in February 2021 after research showed that GPS families and employees were in favor of the changes.

The school year begins eight calendar days earlier than the current school year, with the first full day of classes beginning on July 26, 2022. The earlier start ensures that students have more opportunities for enrichment programs and academic interventions when needed. Teachers at our school campuses will continue to be trained in accordance with the previous school calendars. Although the fall and spring breaks were extended, care was taken not to disrupt the learning environment.

Gilbert Public Schools will now have a similar plan as neighboring districts, including Chandler USD, Higley USD and Queen Creek USD. GPS students and staff will still have the Wednesday before Thanksgiving off, as well as a shortened spring break weekend. Breaks make it easier for families to prioritize time together and plan trips. For families concerned about childcare needs, Gilbert Public Schools continues to offer enrichment programs, youth athletics and summer camps to consider.

In the local community, the beginning of the school year is planned, when summer temperatures could be a problem during some days of outdoor holidays. If there are days when a heat advisory is in effect, GPS elementary students will be inside and have board games, videos, and other alternative activities to keep them entertained during recess. Schools will determine appropriate activities based on the needs of their student population.

The new school calendar means athletics at the GPS junior campuses is moving to four seasons, allowing each school to add boys volleyball to its roster of sports teams. There will also be an expansion of seventh and eighth grade boys and girls soccer. The junior varsity season will now be nine weeks long, including the playoffs, with some adjustments to the game schedule. Opportunities to promote player development will also be provided by Gilbert Youth Athletics. A look at the 2022-2023 junior sports schedule is now available online. GPS athletes and families with questions about the impact of the calendar on junior sports can contact their school's campus athletic director. The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) will continue to oversee and administer athletics at GPS high schools.

The new calendar changes will also apply to the 2023-2024 school year. The first full school day in this school year will be July 25, 2023.
