Njit Academic Calendar Spring 2023 – Since 1766, Rutgers Preparatory School has prepared students for the challenges of college and beyond. In graduate school, students enjoy many of our traditions, from September field trips to pre-semester research projects, we appreciate the connections to the past that our traditions provide. The school year is filled with daily traditions such as Career Day, Burger Blast and of course Commencement, as well as Morning Assembly, when the whole high school comes together to announce sports scores, tell students and teachers about upcoming events. and academic competitions, to applaud the honors our students have won or to share poignant thoughts.

Our many academic and extracurricular offerings complement the great diversity of our community, but through daily experience of working and collaborating with students and faculty from a myriad of professions, we truly appreciate the benefits of living in a multicultural society. At Rutgers Prep, approximately 40% of our students are "colored" – we not only celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, but also Diwali, Eid-ul-Fitr and Chinese New Year. While many organizations promote "color blindness", we openly recognize the diversity of ethnicity, religion, socio-economic status, sexual orientation and other forms that exist in our community and use this diversity to promote understanding and tolerance in our daily interactions.

Secondary students understand the RPS motto: Severa res est verum gaudium – "Hard work is true joy". Excellence in classrooms, art studios, athletic fields, fairgrounds, and the broader communities in which students live is a direct result of their demonstrated effort and commitment. We see it in ways that are easy to measure: college acceptance, standardized test scores, state athletic championships, juried art exhibit selections, or statewide choirs and orchestras. We also experience excellence in more subtle ways: the regularity with which high school students volunteer to read to juniors, the sophistication with which research students present their gene sequencing results to Waxman Institute at Rutgers University. The Data The percentage of students doing community service is much higher than necessary. In high school, students like to challenge themselves every day and work hard to meet expectations.

Secondary students are assigned a counselor upon entering school. Typically, counselors stay with their groups of about ten students as they progress from freshman year through graduation. Counselors play a dynamic role in helping students become independent learners, active participants, and developing leaders who enrich the school and the wider community. Mentors meet regularly with mentees either for short meetings to share important information or for longer meetings to discuss specific topics. They also refer to their personal counseling base informally during the school day and formally in scheduled meetings as needed.

The role of the counselor is to actively listen, advise, praise, facilitate communication between home and school, and provide a more impartial perspective when difficulties arise. Counselors are often in a unique position to provide parents as well as teachers, coaches, or administrators with relevant information about the counselor's situation to help them in their work with the student.

A counselor has a "big picture" view of a student's progress, academic and otherwise, and serves as the student's advocate, especially when he or she is adjusting to high school for the first time, when the student has a difficult start or when teachers have difficulty communicating. The counselor is a sounding board for the student, offering advice on how to handle situations and encouraging the student to be active in the daily life of the school community. He helps the student to set realistic and achievable goals and discusses with the student strategies to achieve these goals.

Rutgers Prep encourages and supports volunteerism among its students – seniors completed more than 11,000 hours of community service last year, even during lockdown and quarantine for most of the school year. According to program requirements, Rutgers Prep expects all high school students to complete at least 10 hours of community service each school year and reflect on that experience, and many choose to exceed our expectations. For students who complete 50 hours or more in any given year, we offer an Honors Level Certificate. The highest level of recognition for completing 250 hours per year is the Honors250 award.

At the heart of Rutgers Preparatory School education is the expectation that our graduates will be well prepared for college and the life ahead. Every Rutgers Prep classroom, K-12, is equipped with projectors and Apple TV, allowing our teachers to share digital resources with their students. Additionally, teachers are taking advantage of VR headsets, MakerBot 3D printers, iPads, and laptops to enhance classroom collaboration. Whether it's a digital presentation or an interactive exercise, this integration of digital and projection technologies enhances the teaching and learning process.

In keeping with this tradition of balancing the new with the familiar, the high school is proud to announce the launch of an expanded iPad initiative for the 2013-2014 school year. After careful consideration and discussion, high school teachers decided that all students should have an iPad.

Pervasive and unified technology provides students and teachers with more opportunities to take advantage of digital tools and resources. Electronic textbooks are readily available and much less expensive, but provide an attractive alternative to traditional texts.

Google Apps As an educational institution, our teachers and students use state-of-the-art management systems to enhance collaborative learning. Additionally, we use a state-of-the-art learning management system to facilitate communication between students and teachers outside of the school day and off campus. Whether it's simply reviewing assignments, participating in a conversation, or accessing digital resources, it's a key part of our 21st century learning.

In the high school liberal arts department, our history teachers work with students to develop skills in understanding the past and applying that understanding to the world we live in today. Our goal is to inspire students to become active participants in the ongoing historical process. Our program introduces students to cultures, events and forces of change across the world, past and present. We provide opportunities to gather and apply information and think critically about issues in the social sciences – history, geography, political theory, economics, sociology, psychology and anthropology.

Beyond this core of knowledge and skills, we aim to promote responsible attitudes and actions. By emphasizing the importance and dignity of individuals, we encourage students to respect themselves and others. We introduce the principles and practices of democracy and encourage students to explore the various economic, social, political and environmental challenges of our time. Students will develop an awareness of these problems and the ability to obtain, evaluate and apply information to solve these problems. Not only do we study the past to understand the present, we also study the possibilities of the future.

Cultural Basics is required for freshmen, juniors must take US history, and seniors must choose a history year. In the second year, it is strongly recommended to study history.

Princeton University's Model Congress – led by Mr. Kutcher – is a club that simulates the legislative process, from drafting a bill to debating and amending proposed laws, culminating in a 4-day conference days with dozens of other schools coming soon to Washington, DC.
