Ut Tyler Academic Calendar 2023-2024 – TYLER, Texas () – The first medical school in East Texas hopes to open admissions facilities this summer, with the first class expected to begin in the summer of 2023.

"We're doing a million things, but it's all exciting," said Brigham Willis, founding dean of the UT Tyler School of Medicine.

Willis hopes to enroll students by July 2023. The school will open without a new building, but will use available space at the UT Health North Campus on Hwy 271.

"We have a beautiful School of Community and Rural Health building where we will do most of our classroom teaching, student services and faculty offices. And then in this building, which is the hospital building, we'll have a simulation center, clinical skills training and an anatomy lab, as well as some faculty offices," Willis said.

The school will eventually operate out of its own building in Tyler's hospital district. Willis said the agreements have been signed and the medical school now owns the land south of UT Health East Texas' main hospital.

"I was just in a design meeting with the architects," Willis said Wednesday afternoon, "So we're in the design stages of this building, and the plan is to have the entire building completed within two to three years."

As for the type of student the school wants to enroll, Willis said they want East Texans who intend to stay and practice in East Texas.

"We design our admissions process to focus primarily on students from East Texas because the mission, the school's entire existence, is to produce physicians who will serve East Texas. We think the best way to do that is to get students from East Texas," Willis said. "There is an incredible need for health professionals, not just doctors but health workers, to address poor health outcomes in the region."

Willis believes some recent major financial contributions will help attract applicants, such as the Fair Foundation's $4 million donation to cover the entire cost of tuition for the school's first grade.

Students interested in applying will do so on the Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Services (TMDSAS) website.

The TMDSAS online application will be available on Monday, May 2, 2022 at 8:00 a.m. (CST) and submissions will open on Monday, May 16, 2022 at 8:00 a.m. (CST). The application deadline is 5:00 p.m. (CST) Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

Students are familiar with the chart during orientation and in the first two lessons have tasks integrated into the curriculum. Additional workshops are held on non-classroom weekends for students to continue their Tableau skills. The EMBA class of 2024 can choose to pursue a Tableau Data Analytics certification at the end of the program.
